The Thirst

‘On The Brink’ is the debut album to come from The Thirst and it is an album chock-full of talented energies. With Afro Caribbean upbringings and punk influences behind them, freshness surrounds this new band as they take your breath away with their infectious tunes.

This album provides an in-depth listen into two very different perceptions of one band. They go from one angle to a complete 180-degree rotation to another extreme. First there are the acoustic numbers such as the opener ‘They Don’t Know’ and ‘I’m Falling’ with the emotionally tender guitars pings opening. Then other tracks are set alight by various elements, mainly the guitar co-ordination. There are the strong guitars of ‘All Mine’ and the jumpy guitar-strumming present on ‘My Everything’, but also the bass guitar underpinning of ‘Don’t Waste Your Time,’ which is hazy and reminiscent of a Bob Marley track. ‘I Believe’ and ‘On The Brink’ had some excellent guitar instrumentals setting the track blazing with emotion and an excited nature release from deep within.

Probably the catchiest tracks present within ‘On The Brink’ have to be ‘Watch Me Now’ for its upbeat riff opening and tremendous vocals streaming and ‘Acre Lane’. The latter in particular is THE best on the album. It is bouncy; there is a drum and a percussion area that was quite surprising but also like the coming together of ingredients made for each other - like strawberries and cream. The vocals and harmonies have honesty about them. Watch out for a new television programme in a year to come, as this track could be the advert - goodbye Coronation Street, hello ‘Acre Lane’.

The vocals are always passionate and full of power from the beginning of track one to the end of the last track. On the new single ‘Sail Away’ the lads sing about getting far away with someone close, often becoming the soundtrack to growing up in Brixton. ‘Ready To Move’ includes lyrics such as “ready to move, ready to wile out/I’ve had a couple of sweets, I’m wide awake now/Let me step in the groove don’t let me leave you/Coz if you’re ready to move then let me see you”. You can hear the passion and enthusiasm buried in the vocals and the melancholic guitar strums that opens it.

This is a shocker of an album that will leave you from beginning to end with your mouth open and heart pumping ten times faster. It is an incredible rush to listen to from a band about to hit the big time.
