Oddly interesting

Seven-piece The All New Adventures of Us made its first impression on me with their recent single ‘Firetruck’. This was a song that stood out from other singles landing on my doorstep for a few reasons; the brass segments, the odd mix of music and vocals and the line “I left you sleeping with an address by your bed, coz no one writes real letters anymore”. This wasn’t a song that could be remembered as a whole, but for small weird parts such as the above.

The other songs ‘Best Loved Goodnight Tales’ will likewise be included in a category labelled “some of the strangest musical material you will hear”. The way in which the album uses a wide display of instruments within the eleven songs produced for this album is slightly odd, yet very creative. As well as the cheery brass segments of ‘Firetruck’ there is the piano introduction that makes the opener ‘A Good Liar Is A Good Storyteller’ a little confusing. It starts with the melancholy piano melodies before a faster paced beat kicks up. Then there are string fragments to ‘Loftets Grand/New Year Outro’ that when situated in the middle of this tune doesn’t really hold up much of an impression unfortunately, due to the concentrated music that follows.

The vocals and music to this record relate in no way what so ever, but it is this that makes them so compatible. There are the male/female vocals taking turns to sing various areas and harmonies. I found ‘St. Crispin’s Got Out Backs’ to be the albums united vocal demonstration. The male/female input is most obvious, prominent and enjoyable as it is listened to.

As I listened to this record, each of the songs seemed to blend into one and other and only ‘Perfectly Imperfect’ really stood out in the end for its continuity. ‘Best Loved Goodnight Tales’ is a record of eleven songs that are odd and quite bizarre yet something sticks out as creative and not just a mass of meaningless notes and voices. It is definitely worth a listen.
