New Rhodes new songs

When it came to listening to ’Everybody Loves a Scene’, the second album from New Rhodes, I found there to be three aspects making a presence.

The first was the remarkable talent they have for creating a great upbeat rock tune. From the opening of the album with the title track you can’t help but be impressed with the trance the song has over you. It and many others are dance filling numbers that make you want to bop your head and move from side to side. This track in particular had uniqueness about its chirpy guitars. The bounciness of the tunes continue with the lively ‘Come into the Room’, the sharper ‘The Joys of Finding and Losing that Girl’, the underpinning of guitar riffs of ‘354’ as well as ‘A&E’ and ‘I’ll Wait For You By The Coast’.

The second point of interest is the slower and much mellower tunes. This includes the heartfelt ‘Let’s Talk’ and the graceful and anthemic ‘The Bells of St John’. The subtle guitar on the latter adds such emphasis on this side of the album.

This track brings me to the third, the reaction of a listener that would be ten times more appreciative when viewing live. Many songs are so sensational that they would cause a riot at a gig. ‘The Bells of St John’ would be a perfect song to get the arms waving and the perfect opportunity for fans to show a little more appreciative of the softer tones tunes. ‘So Alone’ is the complete opposite and with its use of bouncier guitars would cause much more manic expressions of appreciation. As I sat listening to this song I could visualise the pumping atmosphere that would be created in a venue packed with adoring music lovers. ‘Is This The Life You Want?’ would probably receive a similar reaction. ‘You Can Have It All’ is probably the track that combines all three major aspects of this release. It has the subtlety of the softer tunes, the gradual build as it gets more buoyant and because of this combination on style would make ideal for a live performance.

These tracks have such confidence and magnitude that you’ll want to shout how great it is from the roof tops.
