After an even dozen years together as a band, the last nine as a touring and recording group, ground breaking Pacific Northwest DIY skater punks MxPx –(Mike Herrera: Vocals/Bass, Tom Wisniewski: Guitar and Yuri Ruley:Drums) take some time to simultaneously look back and offer a glimpseinto their future with a joint DVD/CD release on SideOneDummy out on January 25 as well as a European tour in January. The B Movie DVD, along with its accompanying AC/EP CD featuring fiveacoustic versions of the band’s songs—including the brand-new “GreySkies Turn Blue” and “The Silver Screen”—sums up the band’s legacy witha behind-the-scenes glimpse into the whirlwind that is MxPx. The film, directed by Jeff Myers with MxPx, shows them touring Europe and Japan, working in the recording studio and just hanging out. It culminates in MxPx’s special three-night stint at Seattle’s Graceland last September, where they performed in front of an enthusiastic throng of long time fans, who sang along with every word. The shows, in which the band played a wide range of material going back to their earliest days, represented a triumphant return home for the boys of Bremerton, WA first got together to form MxPx as freshmen in high school 12 years ago. “This is coming out at the right time for us,” said Herrera. “If wenever did anything again, it’s something worthy for us to leave people with. This is our legacy. It’s not just about the music. It tells the story of three guys growing up together while playing in a band. And we’ve always wanted to be honest with our fans.” The five-song EP includes acoustic versions of “Invitation to Understanding” (from ’98’s A&M album Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo, with violin accompaniment) and the crowd favourite “Quit YourLife,” from 2003’s Before Everything and After, the band’s final album for A&M. Three songs are exclusive to the AC/EP, “The Silver Screen,”“Where Will We Go?” (originally on a 2000 PolyGram video, It Came From Bremerton) and “Grey Skies Turn Blue,” which is now slated to appear on the group’s next album, scheduled to come out early summer 2005 on LA based Independent label SideOneDummy Records. “We added an acoustic set at Graceland for the fans and to capture on the DVD,” said Herrera. “We wanted to make these shows that much more special. We did more than 25 songs a night and repeated only eight, which means we played 50 different songs over the three nights, including some things we’d never done live before. It was definitely challenging for us, a different dynamic. Our fans got to hear tons of songs they never expected.” The release marks the culmination of an era for the group, and a return to their roots on an independent label, after releasing their initial albums on the Christian rock indie label, Tooth & Nail, as well as Fat Wreck Chords. The bands future is with thriving independentSideOneDummy. “In a way, it helps us do what we’ve been trying to do all along,” says Herrera about going with SideOneDummy, whose label co-president Joe Siband MxPx have been friends since Joe’s band 22 Jacks and MxPx toured together a few years back. “If the label’s not going to support you, what’s the point? We asked to be let out of our major label deal, and five months later, they agreed.” The DVD, B Movie features live versions of such MxPx classics as Tomorrow is Another Day, Well Adjusted, Responsibility, PxPx, and Let it Happen. As well as takes fans behind-the-scenes to see what makes the band tick, from confessing their own roles in this dysfunctional, but working family, and answering hate mail from a distraught mom insisting the group is corrupting her daughter to interviews with their rabid followers. “We’re capturing more than just music on this DVD. It’s about a time in the lives of not just us, but our fans. And when I look back, I realise everything we went through was all worth it in the end. I’m more convinced than ever; we are just now entering the on-ramp of the freeway. We’ve always been willing to do whatever needs to be done. Now,we just have to reach within ourselves.” Look for a new full length CD release from MxPx on SideOneDummy Records early summer 2005.
