The Irish are Here

The Snickers tent is virtually full by the time Flogging Molly (who are the first band of the weekend) take to the stage. There is already a good atmosphere with the crowd clapping along to the intro music in anticipation of what's to follow.

Flogging Molly launch straight into a fast, rousing number that sets the pace for the rest of the set. If you've never heard them then imagine The Pogues on speed and you'll get the idea!

Lead singer (and acoustic guitarist) Dave King puts everything into his performance, beginning with "Welcome to Donington, you bastards!" Dedicating the second song (Selfish Man) to George Bush, it's fast and furious and the only mystery is why the crowd at the front aren't going crazy?

The sound is good, everything comes through, from the accordion to the fiddle and banjo and the crowd love it. The musicianship is excellent throughout and is highlighted by a stunning tin whistle performance from Bridget Regan.

All the 7 or 8 songs that they get through follow a similar pattern, occasionally there is a slower introduction but at some point they all erupt into 100mph ball-busting tunes.

Flogging Molly display the same attitude and passion of the Pogues in their infancy and with 3 albums under their belt, they are going strong. Putting Flogging Molly on first was a perfect piece of scheduling as by the time they finish the crowd is in fine voice and well warmed up. An excellent start to the proceedings!
