Scott Matthews Spring Tour

Last night the Portsmouth Pyramids played host to singer/songwriter Scott Matthews, who has already travelled halfway round the country on his headlining tour.

I must say when I walked into the venue it took me by surprise that it was a seated gig, whenever I've been to shows at the Pyramids before they've been home to some of the craziest shows you'll see in Portsmouth, it was also nice to see that for a change I was one of the youngest people in the crowd instead of one of the oldest. At 9pm Scott took to the stage and was welcomed by a huge round of applause, after tuning up his guitar and playing a few chords his husky voice filled the room. In a way his calm, soulful vocals laid over beautiful acoustic guitar riffs were kind of mesmerising and everyone just seemed to be in awe of the talented young man. The sounds coming from his guitar were crisp and clear, so clear in fact that you could hear the noise of his fingers sliding on the strings as he moved them down the guitar's neck.
After three tracks things got a little more lively and become electrified, Scott was joined on stage by a bassist, a drummer and a violin player who played a marvellous yet to be named instrumental song, which for me was definitely the highlight of the night and much more like the music I would normally listen to, although it was very bizarre to just be sat listening when that kind of music was being played I guess I've got used to seeing crowds dancing and jumping along with the music.
Towards the end of the set a group of fans made their way to the front of the stage and started dancing which had Scott and his band in fits of giggles, but like a true professional Scott carried on singing, although his voice was cracked with laughter which in turn made everyone else laugh.

I'll admit that Scott Matthews' music isn't what I'd normally listen to nor is he the type of artist that I'd usually go and see, but he won me over, he's bloody good at what he does, and I'll give kudos to anyone that can play a 12 string guitar half as well as he did. He and his band are extremely talented musicians, and if you get the chance to see Scott you should definitely take it as the lad from Wolverhampton his destined for bigger and better things.
