A new band with New Ideas.
The recent sunny weather has been great but when it comes to a Friday night in a sweaty rammed gig venue, it can get pretty hot and sticky. The Dykeenies may claim to be the brightest and best new thing to come out of Scotland, and that's quite a claim but the local crowd certainly seemed to hang on every word and by the end, the humidity had been worth persevering with.
And with a set of confident pop songs, you can't fault their belief as they seem to have the tunes to back it up. With the guitars at the forefront of their sound, the high end takes centre stage but theres so much going on that at times, newcomers can get a bit dizzy to take it all in. Of course, that's only going to encourage people to come back to try and piece it all together, so its not bad for a band to have that but its best not to discount The Dykeenies too early.
Handclaps are always a winner and recent single 'New Ideas' beckoned an impressive response from a young crowd and the singles stomp and energy is a clear highlight of the night. Theres some punky vibes, theres some stone cold 80s indie guitar and the drums thump enough throughout to evoke pogo after pogo.
With performances at the Camden Crawl and The Great Escape to come in front of a wider audience, theres every chance for The Dykeenies to spread the word to a set of new fans.
