Up and coming modern pop.

Barely pausing for breath after performing at T in the Park, The Dykeenies headlined King Tuts on yet another night when the heavens opened. Thankfully, the mud was a distant memory and the venue offered needy respite from the downpour.

It took a while for the show to get into the full swing; in fact, the most notable part of the early part was the stage banter, with "How do you pull a fat bird? Piece of cake" offering sage dating advice to the crowd but the tunes, initially, seemed a bit limp. Flirting between rock and nu-rave, The Dykeenies seemed as though they weren't sure how to get their point across.

Current single 'Clean Up Your Eyes' stepped up proceedings and brought a darker edge to the evening. The track had more clarity on the guitars, the melodies came through stronger and it seemed very polished compared to the tracks that had gone before and from here on, the night went rather well.

The crowd had been excited up until then (and why not, the schools are off) but it was a turning point and from here on, the drums sounded more clinical and the minimal keyboard sound worked well. As the crowd got involved with handclaps, it was obvious the rammed Tuts was having a good time.

The band finished before their encore with 'New Ideas', a previous single and it seemed strange to come back after a song that was so well received. The reason why it wasn't the set-closer was pretty apparent when the finale came, with the crowd singing every word allowing the lead vocalist to parade around the stage looking rather proud of himself and his band, and why not?

If the Klaxons had been slipped the odd haggis supper when they were growing up, they might have sounded a bit like The Dykeenies.
