Australian duo Angus and Julia Stone are in danger of stealing the show with their fabulous opening performance for Martha Wainwright. The duo’s quirky and lively folk rock keeps the crowd on their feet with an ever changing selection of instruments and plenty of fun. The siblings start off alone on stage performing acoustic ‘All Of Me’ both on guitar and with Julia’s strangely husky vocals instantly enchanting the audience. The singer is even barefoot, adding to the unconventional attributes of the band. During the set Julia also takes to the trumpet for a brief serenade while a drummer crouches behind the duo, delivering thick and heavy beats in a slightly chaotic fashion. We soon learn that this is because he’s the band’s bassist who has to stand in while their usual drummer is ill, but this is just another endearing quirk of the band’s performance. ‘Hollywood’ is a highlight with Angus playing aching slide guitar and a woozy emotional melody rather like Damien Rice’s finest folk. The band perform a curious song that they wrote in an hour for a community radio programme back home, the challenge that week was to write a campfire song and in true Angus and Julia Stone style, this one is a sweet confessional piece with random excerpts from popular campfire tunes thrown in for good measure.
