When farewell turns out to be 'see you later'

It has only been a mere two and a half years since Bowling For Soup played their big farewell tour, but they’re already back in the UK so we went along to their sold out London show. BThe band had clearly saved a bit of money while not on the road, as their backdrop resembled a tavern with two working doors, their stage also housed two flame shooting beer barrels.

Bowling For Soup’s set was essentially the live equivalent of a greatest hits album as it was made up of their best known songs; Ohio, High School Never Ends, Punk rock 101 and of course it closed with Girl All The Bad Guys Want.

The Texan rockers were clearly not content with just playing their own hits, as they threw a medley of pop-punk classics into the mix which included the likes of Blink 182, Green Day and Jimmy Eat World. Those that have seen a BFS show before will know that their set is not complete without a cover of Fountain Of Wayne’s Stacey’s Mom, and their set at the Roundhouse was no different. The Lounge Kittens made a guest appearance during the set and performed 1985 with Bowling For Soup, with the pairing actually working really well.

That was not the Lounge Kittens’ only guest appearance that night as a member reappeared later in the evening to take part in a burping contest along with a member of Lacey and The Dollyrots - sadly, this had minimal entertainment value and the audience quickly lost interest.

Without a new album to promote, it seemed not much had changed for Bowling For Soup during their two and half year absence except some expanding waistbands. Despite the show having the feeling of déjà vu, Bowling For Soup put on an impressive performance and those in attendance were having a great time jumping and dancing around one of London’s most famous venues but it would be good to see some new life injected into their show.
