Confessions of a Saucy Monky

With a truly fantastic band name (named after a passage in a book from British writer Tina Brown), and a debut album named after a lingerie store in LA, Saucy Monky will never be accused of taking themselves too seriously.

'I Touch Myself' may very well sound like a teenage (or any age for that matter) lonesome confession, and you could well be right, however in this instance it is for their single, which is of course a cover of The Divinyls' 1991 classic. Dripping with indie pop it doesn't deviate too far from the original, and the vocals sound very much rockers turned poppers Texas.

It's well produced with a clean sound, which if anything could be too perfect. The joint vocals of Annmarie Cullen and Cynthia Cantania sound really great together just as Elyse Rogers and Karina Denike do for Ska superstars Dancehall Crashers. Add a tight rhythm section of Carson Cohen on bass and main skin-hitter Adam Marcello, and you get a band that can cover a song perfectly, and it would be more than interesting to hear what their own sound is like.

It will be of no surprise that Saucy Monky have had their music on a number of MTV shows, there is a happy teen sound to them, and an essence of college indie that could well bring them success with the correct musical demographics. However where the sugary sweetness and light-hearted Tomfoolery appeals to the Americans, it could well be the lack of rawness, and over produced sound that alienates us Brits, who for some reason prefer less talent and more attitude. What ever your feelings, I always think that in this world there is room for a saucy monky...
