Treeless Plain.

Okay. The Triffids were a band about in the 1980’s and this ‘Treeless plain’ is a re-release from 1983. The band split in 1989 and I’ve searched the great wide world web frantically for any clues as to why exactly it’s been released once more, yet to no avail. So, on the forefront, I figured my dad would be able to help me out with this one- his era of music, his time. After all, without him, I would no doubt be naïve to the legendary status of Squeeze, The Cure and Joy Division. The Triffids he said? No idea.

So, let’s get this straight. Nobody really knew who they were in 1983 (I say nobody I mean not my dad) and they release it again in 2008. This in turn provided a great desire to research these guys a little bit and learn about their time together, the sudden death of influential band member David McComb at the age of 36; the primary song writer for the Australians and their discography if you like. One of the best bands to come from Australia apparently- in a guy’s top ten albums ever ‘treeless plain’. I’m missing something.

I think a Triffid is a tree; so google.com tells me; with a stem that does not snap yet is still weak enough to be crushed. Well, the bands history and fanbase they have built up can’t be diminished but trust me, I doubt very much a future can be created from this one. I couldn’t really find anything intriguing about it; much like the Sinister Cleaners (another 80’s band), they were at the time, clearly out-done by the influential bands of the era that have helped shape our industry as it is today.

Disagree with me please, because I always feel harsh slagging off music produced by the deceased however it didn’t grab me. Merely too young perhaps?

It would probably make a good fathers day present if they enjoyed them at the time, but as far as my household goes; I’m on my way to buy a different 80’s revival.
