Taking Simon And Garfunkel To The Dark Side

The cover song, a term that is so taboo many bands run from it screaming whilst pop wannabes rub their hands together at the thought of the general public foolishly falling in love with their slaughtering of a once classic track. With such a mine field before them its somewhat surprising that Manchester based band Smith 6079 would even contemplate the challenge let alone taking on the kings of MOR Simon and Garfunkel but step up to the challenge they have, even managing to put their own spin on things to really stir things up.

Taking Simon and Garfunkel to the dark side, Smith 6079 have managed to delve further into the midst of despair, vanquishing any hint of uplifting harmonies that once resided in the track and replacing them with brooding vocals that go hand in hand with a haunting snare drum that threateningly keeps the march going. The original is still there beneath the atmospheric bleakness that brings new life to the track. B side ‘Here Again’ meanwhile struts in with a swaggering confidence as the rock ante is boosted as the guitars are turned up and a catchy chorus is rolled out. They may do covers well but unlike some Smith 6079 aren’t a band who’ll have to rely on them to earn a crust.
