Giving The Politically Correct Police The Middle Finger

Easily offended? Content with the conformity of a P.C World where watching what you say is the highlight of your day? Then New York’s Mindless Self Indulgence is definitely not the band for you. Offensive, rude, obnoxious and insulting with every abusive ounce, MSI are a huge breath of fresh air who douse you with electro . Five albums in and the New York quartet are steadily breaking out of their cult status, attacking the masses and abusing anyone in their tracks, but then what would you expect form a band whose led by a man called Jimmy Urine?

Leaving no taboo untouched, Jimmy Urine and his boisterous band cheekily set out to shock with a grin firmly plastered across their face as ‘If’ opens with the infectious high-octane blast of ‘Never Wanted To Dance’ with Urine happily reciting “there’s nothing you could do that I have not already done to my self” with a menacing punch within seconds of the track kicking off.

In your face and ready to pummel you into the ground, the track brilliantly sets up the band’s fifth album, showcasing their electronically driven punk with its hint of robotics and avalanche crash of insults and abuse all entwined around their ridiculously busy and hectic instruments. ‘Lights Out’ explodes with an energetic rush of beats and Urine’s high pitched vocals that weave around every line compelling as he pelts out controversial line after insult after offence before the chillingly unnerving blast of ‘Prescription’ creeps in and slows things down slightly. It’s the tongue in cheek of ‘Get It Up’ that truly captures the humour of MSI though as Urine muses his sexual impotency deciding that “it must be your face/ or it’s your body/ if it ain’t your body then it must be your face”, declaring that it’s never happened to him before with naughty fun oozing from every line. Then there’s the menace of ‘Mastermind’ to contend with as MSI’s crunchy sound collides with Urine’s whispered vocals that swiftly get flung to one side for ‘On It’ that screams and thumps with rage fuelled venom before a blast of “heys” knocks you to the ground as ‘Pay For It’ whacks you with an industrial sized blast of electro hard-core.

In MSI world no subject is left alone as album closer ‘Mark David Chapman’ boldly stands testament to. Apparently written with the help of fans input over the net (now surely that’s a new one?), ‘Mark David Chapman’ attacks bands who have started to all look and sound alike, controversially claiming that its now time for another Mark Chapman before declaring that Hitler had an emo haircut! Insane, to the point and offence, ‘Mark David Chapman’ manages to abuse with every line whilst consciously touching on today’s music world with a little extra bite than is normal.

Be prepared to be abused, be prepared to be offended but most importantly be prepared to have some fun. MSI are punk with an electro core who simply don’t care and who will insult and ridicule with a sadistic smile on their face as they leave you begging for more. Giving the middle finger to the politically correct police, ‘If’ will delight and mock with one gleeful punch.
