The Jury Is Still Out

Fresh from supporting The Holloways on tour, The Scratch take time to unleash their Brit punk single ‘Girls World’ on the nation, even going that one step further by releasing it on their own label.

Bubbling with potential there’s a large part of you that wants these guys to succeed, that wants there retro punk beats and snarls to hurl you into next week and leave you begging for more but somehow it just doesn’t happen. Initially it’s the vocals of ‘Girls World’ that puts you off, coming across more like a comedy mickey take that a earnest try but as the track builds momentum things start to look good; guitars start to stab and jut appealing and a sneer punches out of every line its just there doesn’t seem to be much oomph to the track. Catchy yes, pulling out the pop punk beats most definitely but still that vital spark fails to ignite.

B side, ‘Sweet Surprise’ on the other hand blows everything out of the water. Stomping and strutting with attitude, ‘Sweet Surprise’ is an energetically charged buzz that will nail you to the ground in under two minutes leaving you slightly confused about The Scratch. Perhaps their next effort will tell us more.
