Biography

Formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris, Iron Maiden have sold over 80 million records and are almost universally revered by fans of heavy metal and hard rock the world over. Since their first album release in 1980 they have continually set the standard for their peers. With original vocalist Paul Di'Anno departing after two albums the scene was set for ex Samson vocalist Bruce Dickinson to enter the fold and give the band the fresh impetus they needed to achieve worldwide success. This they achieved with 1982's The Number of the Beast album, which remains a firm fan favourite to this day.

Dickinson left the band in 1993 to be replaced by former Wolfsbane singer Blaze Bayley. Bayley's time with Maiden is generally recognised as being their least notable period and he left by mutual consent in 1999 opening the door for Dickinson to return after six years away, during which time he achieved moderate solo success. The bands releases since Dickinson's return have met with critical acclaim, culminating in 2006's 'A Matter of Life and Death'. Despite having had 24 different members over their career the core of Iron Maiden has remained constant and is no doubt a major factor in their continued success. read less
